Degree Course Summary

The multidisciplinary preparation offered by the Specialization Course program involves the conduct of traditional training activities (lectures, conferences, and field trips) and experimental activities (workshops and laboratories on the topics ….).
The first-year teaching coincides with the teachings of the OPEN Specialization Course in Architecture and Landscape Representation (University Roma Tre – Department of Architecture).  It takes place over the course of 11 months, from February to January.
The teaching of the second year takes place according to the thematic and multidisciplinary educational program indicated in the following Plan of Educational Activities. It is organized for 10/11 months per year and divided into lectures and training activities distributed weekly between Fridays and Saturdays (February to July) and for one week per month (September).
In October, November and December, the preparation of the Specialization thesis takes place. Students enrolled in the two-year ARPA International Specialization Degree Architecture and Representation of Landscape and the Environment may, by the end of the first year, apply to transfer to the Level II OPEN Specialization Degree Architecture and Representation of Landscape and obtain the corresponding annual degree, subject to the establishment of an integration of the enrolment fee, which is decided from year to year by the Specialization Council.

Students who have enrolled in the annual Level II OPEN Specialization Degree Architecture and Representation of Landscape may by December apply to transfer to the two-year international ARPA Specialization Degree Architecture and Representation of Landscape and Environment. Those who have graduated from the Roma Tre Specialization degrees indicated in the paragraph Recognition of prior skills, may enrol in the second year of the two-year ARPA International Specialization Degree Architecture and Representation of Landscape and the Environment, according to the procedures described in the above paragraph.

Students who have obtained a postgraduate degree on subjects related to those of the Specialization program at other universities (Specialization degree, Graduate Schools, Doctorates) may enrol in the second year of the two-year ARPA Architecture and Representation of Landscape and the Environment Specialization program, according to the procedures described in the paragraph Recognition of prior skills.

The first year of the two-year international Specialization Course program coincides with the teaching activities of the Level II Specialization Course program “OPEN-Architecture and Landscape Representation” and is divided into three intertwining parts: the first two – OPEN Lessons and OPEN Talks – have a theoretical-critical character; OPEN Workshops, on the other hand, has an applicative nature.

OPEN Lessons is the set of thematic OPEN seminars, each of which is organized in a series of lectures taking place throughout the duration of the Course and dedicated to the basic subjects of training the urban open space designer. OPEN Talks are the OPEN lectures, given by well-known Italian and foreign experts, that solicit students on some key topics of contemporary culture on the representation and design of open space and contemporary landscape.

OPEN Workshops are the intensive workshops on representation, digital drawing, photography, GIS, historical garden and design, which delve into specific topics, with a focus on transformations of open spaces, held and directed by well-known Italian and foreign experts. The second year of the International Biennial Specialization Degree ARPA – Architecture and Representation of Landscape and the Environment has a more technical and specialized character and is structured through five macro-themes, each of which is divided into theoretical seminars and, in some cases, applied activities. The cadence of the meetings is weekly, concentrated in the days and outside the Department of Architecture of Roma Tre and moments dedicated to seminars that involve in a more active way the Specialization participant. At the end of the five seminars there is an intensive week of Design Laboratory (5 CFU). The five macro-themes in which the activities of the second year are divided are:

  1. administration, management and enhancement of environmental heritage
  2. ecology and environmental protection
  3. surveying, knowledge, and communication of the territory
  4. methodologies for sustainable design of the built environment
  5. landscape research, projects, and financing

Course educational goals

The two-year Specialization degree aims to update and complete the training of architects, planners, landscape architects, environmental engineers, geotechnical engineers, geologists, geographers, archaeologists, art and architectural historians, anthropologists, economists, business economists, jurists, and communicators, providing the indicated figures with an experience of learning and experimenting with multidisciplinary practices in the protection, enhancement and management of the natural and built environment. The two-year Specialization degree prepares for the performance of professional activities in the field of sustainability and environmental protection, both in public administration and private business. The Specialization degree can also be a professional development experience for personnel already working in public and private entities.

  • Knowledge of the elements for landscape design.
  • Awareness of trends in contemporary landscape architecture.
  • Expertise in the design of parks and urban public spaces.
  • Application of analog and digital representation methods and techniques for the landscape, with emphasis on new software for three-dimensional modelling starting with the use of two-dimensional cartography, moving on to the creation of 3D from photography to the representation of greenery through the application of different software.
  • Concepts for the management of spatial maps, their reading on different cognitive levels and georeferencing using GIS software.
  • Application of methods and techniques related to Urban and Landscape Surveying with the use of new digital instrumentation: laser scanners and photometering software.
