Degree Course Summary
The Master’s takes place over 11 months, from January to December 2021, excluding August. It is divided into 12 one-week modules once a month and two consecutive weeks in December.
Theoretical and methodological lectures on historical, structural, technical, legal, economic and management topics prepare the ground for a restoration project.
Several modules, with practical exercises, are dedicated to structural diagnostics, consolidation methods, materials diagnostics and techniques for the restoration of woodwork, architectural surfaces and decorative elements. These modules are organized by specialist companies in order to impart professional know-how regarding materials and restoration techniques for specific constructive, historical and whole building contexts. A specific module is aimed at acquiring knowledge of the tools and methods used for the creation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The drafting of the project, a crucial moment in the teaching of the Master’s, is conducted through two specific laboratories, the Architectural Design Laboratory and the Economics Design Laboratory. Both laboratories are held at the Palazzo Silvestri Rivaldi School Worksite in Rome, under the supervision of the Directorate General for Education and Research of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT). To access the school worksite, students must comply with the safety regulations for construction sites, including health suitability and the training provided under the Master’s.
By the end of December, students enrolled in the One-year 2nd Level International Master’s in “Architectural Restoration and Cultures of Heritage” may submit an application to transition to the Two-year Master’s in “Cultures of Heritage: Knowledge, Protection, Valorization and Management”, thereby renouncing the one-year degree for the related two-year degree, upon payment of the fees for the second year.
By the end of the first year, students enrolled in the Two-year 2nd Level Master’s in “Cultures of Heritage: Knowledge, Protection, Valorization and Management” may submit an application to transition to the One-year 2nd Level International Master’s in “Architectural Restoration and Cultures of Heritage”, and obtain the qualification upon payment of the enrolment fee and approval by the Master’s Council.
Course educational goals
The Master’s aims to train expert architects in the recovery and restoration of historic architecture and buildings, in the harmonious architectural design of urban and natural environments, and in the restoration of historic town centres and of Italian heritage, in full respect of its various identities.
In collaboration, for over a decade, with the various institutions responsible for cultural heritage in Rome and the Lazio Region, and with contributions from sector experts and teachers of various disciplines, including archaeologists, art historians, economists and jurists, the Master’s promotes an interdisciplinary and intersectoral vision of cultural heritage that responds to the latest local, territorial and state developments.
