21010043 - HISTORY AND METHODOLOGY OF ANALYSIS IN ARCHITECTURE

The knowledge of historic architecture is very important to help the students improve their capacity of understanding the buildings and their design and technical features; this knowledge is gained through the study of the whole of buildings’ motivations, historic context and design features. The wide variety of courses dealing with history of architecture comes from this conviction.
The course of History of Architecture and Methods of Analysis aims at critically retracing the composition process -either ideological, methodical or procedural- at the basis of every architecture; it is directed towards the students of the fifth year of course, that are already aware of the role that history of architecture plays in the design process. In particular, the very role of history in relation to architectural design during centuries is at the basis of the disciplinary orientation meant for the topics at hand, avoiding to take into account the use of simple stylistic issues as repertoire-catalogue and preferring the methodological lesson from the past.
Once the intention of considering above all the historical evolution of the design method has been stated, the language will be dealt with closely during the classes, together with the programmatic criteria and the motivations -even ideological- found in the period of time between the Fifteen century and today.

Programma

The course of “History and Methods of Analysis of Architecture” aims at critically retracing the composition process - either ideological, methodical or procedural- at the basis of every architecture. Lessons in chronological sequence, from early modern age to the XX century, are dedicated to masterworks or lesser known architectures, discussing the sources required by selected "history making" processes.
This section of the course aims at presenting a series of different historical analysis and interpretations, considered of significant value with respect to the scientific background of the author, to her/his methods of investigations, to research goals, patronage and chronological context.
In particular, the course will deal with monographic topics aimed at the methodological acquisition for the workshop elaboration of ‘Atlases of Architecture’. The topics will vary, depending on the year, from diachronic readings of specific typologies (convent architecture, church models, the villa, the residence, ...) to certain territorial contexts (the Umbria of sanctuaries, new cities in Sicily, ...), or interpretative analyses of general phenomena (sustainability in history, spontaneous architecture, the concept of the ‘Classic’, ‘Geoarchitecture’, ...).

Modalità Erogazione

Classes are organized as a sequence of lessons thematically ordered. Active participation of students is highly recommended, as well as their attendance to all the activities (visits to exhibitions or sites of interests) foreseen by the schedule provided. At the end of the course, each student is asked to present a critic paper on a topic previously agreed with the professors: this elaborate, filled by text, images and analytic drawings, can be either in paper or digital format (file .pdf preferred).

Modalità Frequenza

Attendance is mandatory for 75% of the course duration

Modalità Valutazione

The examination consists of an oral test, based on the student's knowledge of the bibliography provided by the course and the topics discussed in the lecture, and the submission of a written paper, the result of individual research, related to the monographic topics addressed in the course and agreed with the lecturer. More details will be provided during the course.
