Several decades later, Edoardo Salzano—a leading figure in Italian urban planning—critically highlighted the often unsatisfactory outcomes of these principles. He noted how the role of historic centres as “privileged places to live, work, and meet” has been progressively weakened by processes such as depopulation, tertiarisation, the pressure of mass tourism, and the consequent loss of basic services and local commercial activities.
