The objectives of the individual module help to define the set of objectives of the entire course.
The course offers the theoretical and operational knowledge which are essential for describing and designing the open spaces of the city, enhancing their architectural, functional, and environmental features, and managing the spatial, temporal, social, and ecological interactions between their biotic and abiotic components.

Programma

Aim: the course intends to provide basic knowledge of Botany and Plant Ecology suitable for the recognition and interpretation of vegetation patterns of natural or cultural origin in urban and peri-urban open spaces, with constant reference to their presence in historical and contemporary design typologies.

Contents:

Section I: Flora and Vegetation (structure and composition) in the urban environment and in the natural habitat. Vegetation complexes: correlation between vegetation and environmental factors.
• Elements of Botanical Systematics; PVN Potential Natural Vegetation within the Holocene, current interglacial period
• Native and alien plants, archaeophytes and neophytes, spontaneous, synanthropic and cultivated
• Biocoenosis - Biotope - Habitat - Ecosystem - Landscape - Anthropocene and Symbiocene
• Gradients of naturalness: natural, semi-natural, rural, artificial ecosystems (parks and gardens, urban and peri-urban settlements)
• Vegetation structure - Plant communities - Vegetation dynamism - Primary and secondary plant succession
• Elements of Phytosociology- Strategic-functional classification of plants CSR (Grime)
• Biomes, Chorotypes, Ecoregions
• Elements of Phytogeography - Mediterranean biogeographical region - Mediterranean ecozones in the world

Section II: Plant landscape of Latium; Mediterranean, submontane, riparian vegetation, the Roman countryside (Agro Romano) as anthropic steppe.
• Habitat, definition and classification according to the European Habitats Directive DH; List of endemic regional habitats to be protected and conserved: SIC, ZSC e ZPS
• Hot-spots and Red Lists of endangered Vegetation
• Landscape Ecology: Patch-corridor-matrix, Buffer-zone, Ecological networks
• Ecological fragmentation and connectivity, biodiversity in natural and urban environments. Third landscape

Section III: Types of Vegetation and analysis of the main taxa (plant species)
• Grassland formations: steppe, prairie, savannah, urban meadow and lawn
• Shrubs: typology, resilience, mediterranean maquis shrubland
• Trees: forest, woodland, countryside and urban trees; morphology, physiology and ecosystem services SE;
• Forestation and afforestation between wilderness, green project and ecosystemic approach.
